    DANIA WATERFRONT CCCL PERMIT

METRIC successfully obtained a permit from FDEP for the removal and replanting of the seagrapes along the entire length of the beach dune. This was a very difficult permit to obtain, with FDEP and FWC initially voicing opposition to the project.

    COASTLINE/ DUNE RESTORATION

Metric was the prime consultant for this restoration project that required an analysis of the site to assess the vegetation, elevations, soils, habitat, and external factors, such as the potential impact of nearby lighting on sea turtles. Metric designed the mitigation plan, including the monitoring and maintenance components, located the materials for the project, including rare plant species, and conducted construction oversight for the project. Metric also provided an evaluation of lighting impacts at the site and provided a plan to minimize lighting impacts to protected species sea turtles that are known to nest on the beach.

    SCOPE OF SERVICES PERFORMED:

METRIC is providing comprehensive support for monitoring, maintaining and developing mitigation sites for FDOT, throughout Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. Work also includes damage assessments, regulatory coordination, contractor oversight, benthic resource survey, and other related tasks. Selected project work performed to-date includes:

Lower Matecumbe Key - Tropical Hammock and Rare Rock Barren Habitat Management

METRIC is conducting monitoring and maintenance oversight of this mitigation site for FDOT. Maintenance activities are very detailed, given the high level of exotic species that had colonized the site. In addition to achieving full exotic control, METRIC is conducting root pruning and supplemental planting on site to improve colonization by native species.

Boca Chica Key - Seagrass Restoration

METRIC developed an experimental pilot project, recently implemented, for this 100-acre lagoon located within the Key West Naval Air Station property. The original mitigation site (designed by others) was delinquent in achieving success as a seagrass mitigation site. METRIC developed a plan to return the site to compliance, and to achieve 90+ total acres of seagrass coverage. Additional work included obtaining regulatory agency authorization, and providing contractor oversight for implementation in the field.

Bahia Honda Bridge Coral Relocation and Voids Filling

METRIC conducted monitoring to ensure that coral relocation efforts had been followed in accordance with permit requirements, and served as Project Manager for a successful effort to fill underwater voids associated with bridge pilings that had served as a trap for conchs.

TOWN OF DAVIE URBAN FOREST ASSESSMENT
    PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In order to help the Town of Davie assess their existing forest canopy for maintenance, planning and environmental management goals, Metric Engineering's Environmental Division prepared a winning State of Florida Division of Forestry grant application (submitted through the South Florida Audubon Society) to conduct a Townwide tree canopy assessment/inventory. Upon award of the grant, Metric was awarded the project.

    SERVICES PROVIDED

Metric's arborist services for the project included conducting numerous tree and landscape vegetation inventories on plot locations which included identification of species, size (diameter, height, canopy spread), health, proximity to infrastructure and other site characteristics.

Once field work was complete, Metric prepared a report that detailed the composition of the Town's forest canopy, potential management and maintenance risks and environmental functions.

Upon receipt of the report, the State Division of Forestry was so impressed that it issued an addendum to the grant to double the original award amount, for the purpose of expanding the geographic reach of the inventory and the sampling intensity, as well as to identify potential planning/management options.

DANIA BEACH COASTAL PARTNERSHIP INITIATIVE WATERFRONT REDEVELOPMENT GRANT (100 WEST DANIA BEACH BOULEVARD DANIA BEACH, FL 33004)
    PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The City of Dania Beach identified redevelopment of the City's signature oceanfront site as a key to revitalization of tourism and enhancement of revenues for the City. The beach site contains public amenities in various states of service which have degraded the functional appeal, visual appeal and the public safety of the beachfront.

In order to help fund a planning effort to develop a new beachfront plan, Metric Engineering, working as general environmental consultants to the City, applied for and were awarded a Florida Department of Environmental Protection Coastal Partnership Initiative grant in the amount of $30,000. The grant will fund various portions of the redevelopment plan, included a plan to assess and develop resiliency measures for potential impacts from major storm events.
