Today, Metric Engineering celebrates its 50-year anniversary. The milestone represents relationships built, challenges overcome, and communities strengthened. It reflects a family legacy that continues to evolve, one generation building upon the last.
Fifty years ago today, Metric Engineering was founded on the principle of providing personalized consulting engineering services. Over the past five decades, Metric’s story has evolved alongside the infrastructure it helps design: steady, resilient, and forward-looking.
“What began as a small family business founded in 1976 by my grandfather, Victor Benitez, has remained true to its roots,” says CEO Veronica Benitez, Psy. D, who was appointed in early 2021. Under Veronica’s leadership, Metric launched a refreshed brand and continued broadening its multidisciplinary approach.
Founded in Miami, civil engineer Victor M. Benitez, P.E., sought to build a firm rooted in technical excellence, integrity, and service to local communities. Metric has grown alongside Florida’s expanding transportation network, contributing to some of its most notable infrastructure initiatives. Over time, Metric built a strong reputation in transportation planning, traffic engineering, construction engineering inspection, and more.
In 1977, Metric won its first Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) contract for a District 3 Highway/Bridge Design. From there, operations expanded in 1979 with Metric’s first survey, transit, and PD&E jobs. CEI services followed a couple years later. Metric’s headquarters remained based in Miami, but the organization expanded its presence with regional offices in the Florida panhandle in the early eighties. Not long after, the Orlando office was established in 1990 and Metric grew to 100 employees.

By the 2000s, Metric continued to expand into intelligent transportation systems, traffic operations, GIS, technology services, and multidisciplinary infrastructure solutions. They also continued strategic expansion throughout Florida into Jacksonville, and later Tampa. In 2015, Metric Consulting, LLC was created to address disaster recovery efforts, including mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery, while also solidifying its presence in Louisiana. This year, Metric launched its Texas Division and also its newest service line, Landscape Architecture.
Metric’s commitment to delivering the highest standards hasn’t gone unnoticed. The firm has consistently ranked among Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) Top 500 Design Firms nationally, as well as the ENR Top 100 Texas & Southeast Design Firms for more than 10 years.

Today, Metric is a family- and woman-owned Hispanic minority business, employing over 450 employees with a regional presence in multiple states. Looking ahead, Metric will continue to expand its geographic reach while broadening its services with new capabilities and exploring opportunities in the federal sector.
The next fifty years will continue building on the groundwork that’s already been established, guided by Victor Benitez’s original mission: delivering world-class resources and innovative engineering solutions while preserving the attention to detail and personal touch of a smaller, local company.
