This project involved the construction of a 2.25-mile oval track designed to support high-speed testing of emerging toll technologies, ITS, and automated/connected vehicles. The track consists of a 5 lane straightaway typical section with paved shoulders and 2 lane super-elevated oval curve typical sections with paved shoulders. The project also involved about 1,000,000 cubic yards of earthwork including two 30-foot high MSE Retaining Walls; more than 16,600 linear feet of drainage pipe with 91 drainage structures, two (2) wet detention ponds; a 3 sided precast arch bridge culvert on mass concrete spread footing foundation spanning 56 ft; individually dimmable highway lighting system ITS elements that include more than 38,500 linear feet of fiber optic cable, 12 CCTV cameras, as well as, an 11,784 square foot Operations Building and a 9,074 square foot Storage Building. The Operations and Storage Buildings meet the Silver Requirement for LEED in accordance with the USGBC. This project is the recipient of the 2019 FTBA Best in Construction Award for Project of Special Significance, the 2019 ENR Award of Merit for Specialty Construction, and the 2020 America’s Transportation/SASHTO award for ‘Best Use of Technology & Innovation.
