What started as Transportation System Management & Operations (TSM&O) services such as Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) design evolved into the first Active Arterial Management (AAM) “living laboratory” and the Statewide AAM Needs Plan. This Plan focused on Operations & Maintenance (O&M) staffing needs to run Transportation Management Centers (TMCs) optimally.
From there, we have taken an active role in staffing TMCs of all sizes which includes the 24/7/365 device and roadway monitoring of Freeways, Arterials (AAM), and now Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) which combines both. Our specialty services coordinates with many stakeholders for cohesive TMC management including building strong relationships with first responders and maintaining agencies to benefit the traveling public. As a value-add, we employ true TSM&O practices by providing O&M recommendations back to Planning departments, be it added coverage (Intelligent Transportations Systems (ITS)/ATMS) or identifying geometric deficiencies, as well as make real-time signal changes and/or implement diversion plans as required.
As a trusted partner, we view each TMC as a cohesive ICM program and will help our clients chart the way for future growth (Express Lanes, Connected Vehicles (CV)/Automated Vehicles (AV)) through the documentation of Standard Operating Guidelines (SOGs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Metric has provided Operations for TMCs remotely or full-time, in-house management of large ICM programs. However, it cannot be stressed enough that there is no “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to our clients. Each transportation system is unique, whether a more rural District or a more mature ITS within a for a large metropolitan area. Each varies when it comes to the TSM&O tools and strategies available to them and we collaborate with them to implement the best strategies for the needs of their motoring public.
